We took a walk this afternoon at Fred Fletcher Park to build on Titus’s self control around distractions. We started with “Wait” at the car. Titus knows not to jump out until I tell him when. This way I can gather my things instead of rushing and wrestling with him. He wore a backpack so he has a job to focus on on our walk. We practiced lots of back to back commands – sit, heel, sit, down, stay, come – keeping him on his toes paying attention to me instead of everything else around him. Titus was very distracted by the squirrels, so he had to sit and build self control around them. If he tried to pull ahead, I turned into him and started walking circles to claim space. Chasing squirrels in the yard at home is ok, but on a walk he needs to be focused. He’s learning so much!
