Sometimes you have to show your dog how it’s done! Every car seems different, so don’t be surprised if your pup is suddenly apprehensive going for a ride. The important things are to:
1. Not let them back away. Get a running start if you can. Throw a treat in the car and/or get in 1st. Little leash tugs (don’t pull).
2. Allow them to make an effort. Prop their front two paws up, then gently lift their butt in the rest of the way.
3. Practice letting them get in & out at home in your driveway. Make it fun! You don’t want them to feel trapped.
4. (For safety) Teach them the car door is a threshold. They are not allowed to jump out without permission. Say “WAIT” and use your body to block them. You might just be putting bags in the car.
