Barley is practicing her leash manners in the neighborhood with Lana. Barley is shy and a little weary of objects we pass on the sidewalk, so walking with Lana helps her see another dog who isn’t worried. When we walk, I look up and around, pretending both dogs are my shadow. If Barley is spooked by a mailbox or trash can, she will look up and see it doesn’t phase me and I’m not looking at her. This will show her right away there’s nothing to worry about. When we finish walking, they both hold a down in the driveway to end on a calm note. Holding a down in public also builds confidence for Barley, and she has a friend to help her out. Then they sit at the gate before being invited inside. Good girls!
