1. We started with a baby gate to safely establish the threshold & set them up for success by the front door area.
2. Next steps are telling them “STOP” ahead of time with the gate open. I practiced walking towards the door to open & close it. Then added a knock & doorbell to further test their self-control. Not 1 paw forward fellas!
3. I return with a casual “Good Boy” or occasional treat without any excitement.
4. Practice! Practice! No exceptions! Consistency is key! The goal is to completely remove the baby gate one day and feel safe that your dogs will not dash out an open door (without permission of course)!
