We are working on resource guarding with Faolan. He has a tendency to get snippy and possessive with his treats, food, or bones with the other dogs. When dogs do this, they essentially think that those items are theirs to guard. Sorry…. Dogs own nothing. They don’t spend their money on them! If they know its not theirs, they know they can’t guard it! We are showing Faolan this during mealtime. By making him wait for permission to eat "my" food, it lets him know that I decide who gets what and I can take it away if I want. I also control each dog so they are not allowed to steal from each other. This makes him secure in knowing he doesn’t have to worry that someone will steal his food, therefore keeping him from guarding it!
