Enzo is a shy, fearing dude. So some of our exercises need to be modified until he’s more confident. Even so, he surprises me with how quickly he can overcome his fears! When we ask for a “down” most dogs resist out of stubbornness. It puts them in a lower position and they naturally like to be “on top of things”. For Enzo this puts him in a vulnerable position, “something can get me easier”. So when I ask for a settle, he just needs to stay on the bed. He doesn’t have to go into a “down”, he just needs to stay put. He can stand, sit or lay down if he’s comfortable. We spent the evening working on this concept. He surprised me by being comfortable enough to lay down on his own! This was a BIG step for Enzo and GIANT step for his confidence! Yay!
