Cora is a working dog who needs lots of mental stimulation. By giving her jobs to do, she stays occupied and doesn’t go looking for something to get into. Mealtimes can be a good time to practice lots of different leadership activities.
1. By eating from my hand, Cora is learning that it is my food that I offer her, which prevents guarding. Even if there is food on her paws, it’s still my food.
2. Staying in a down while she eats builds on that command. The longer she holds a relaxed down, the more comfortable and regular thing it is for her to do.
3. Builds self control. Cora knows there is food on the floor and her paws, but she is learning to check with me first. The longer she maintains eye contact, the harder she’s working!
4. Builds on a “leave it” command. By waiting for eye contact, Cora is learning to wait and check in with me before devouring what she sees.
